The rubber cable grommet oval design creates a protected transition through an elongated cutout. It keeps the cable from bearing directly on the panel edge and can be customized in size, material and color. For a preassembled cable, choosing the inner opening requires attention to the connector as well as the cable jacket.
Work through the assembly sequence before fixing the dimensions. A connector may pass through the bare panel but fail to pass through the installed grommet. If the part must be placed on the cable before termination, that order needs to be included in the product assembly process. Excessively stretching the finished grommet over a large connector can damage its retaining shape.
Once the cable is positioned, align the oval opening with the route so the bundle does not bear only against a curved end. Keep enough flange clearance for the rubber to remain flat around the panel.
During later repairs, avoid treating removal as the reverse of an unsuitable installation method. Inspect the grommet after any connector has been drawn through it, paying particular attention to small tears in the inner boundary.
