A rubber shock absorber used as a molded buffer works through deformation within an available space. The useful design question is not simply how thick the rubber looks, but how the contacting component reaches it and how much controlled movement the assembly permits afterward.
Identify the contact direction and the supporting structure behind the buffer. A broad face approached squarely loads the rubber differently from a narrow edge arriving at an angle. The attachment must keep the part located through those contacts without forcing the rubber to carry unintended twisting or peeling loads at its mounting interface.
Evaluate the buffer in the complete mechanism at the relevant operating conditions. Look for concentrated marks, contact with surrounding metal, or a change in the resting clearance after repeated operation. A flexible bumper does not establish a rated energy absorption capacity by appearance alone. During maintenance, check the component that strikes it as well as the rubber itself; a shifted bracket or worn guide can change the approach and damage an otherwise correctly selected buffer.
