A square rubber washer can resist turning within a correspondingly shaped seat, but its corners must fit that seat's actual radii. A square opening in metal or molded plastic may have rounded internal turns that differ from the washer's visible outline. The corners should engage without becoming the only areas carrying contact.
Compare the straight sides and curved transitions separately. A washer that is stopped by its corners may appear located while its face remains above the intended seat. Conversely, excessive corner clearance can permit more movement than the design expects. Custom shaping should resolve these relationships before the part is clamped.
For warm service, choose the compound around the actual heat and contacted medium, without assigning a temperature limit from shape alone. Inspect corner contact after the assembly reaches its intended position. During maintenance, look for a folded tip or localized mark at a turn and compare it with the recess beneath. Reproduce the developed corner geometry in replacements rather than rounding off an incompatible washer by hand to make it drop into the opening.
