A rubber buffer damper provides a compliant contact element within a custom mechanical assembly. Its shape, working face, and attachment geometry should suit the direction in which contact or movement occurs. Rubber material and hardness can be selected around the actual load and surrounding environment.
The buffer needs to meet the moving or supported component on the intended area. An offset contact can load an edge instead of the designed face, and nearby structure may limit the space available for rubber deformation. Establish the complete contact path and mounting position before selecting the dimensions. A larger or harder buffer is not automatically the correct answer to an alignment problem.
Evaluate the assembled part under the operating motion expected in service. Any vibration or shock related result depends on that motion, the load, and the supporting structure. Keep the attachment secure and inspect the rubber for uneven deformation or rubbing against unintended surfaces. During replacement, preserve the working height and face orientation so the buffer returns to the contact relationship for which the assembly was designed.
