A silicone sealing washer should keep its inner opening clear while the surrounding band is compressed between the mating faces. The washer can shift or spread if its locating clearance and support are not coordinated. Choose the thickness and diameters around the complete closing geometry rather than an approximate outline that fits on the bench.
Select the formulation for the actual medium, temperature, and cleaning conditions. Check whether a shoulder or fillet prevents the washer from sitting flat before the joint closes. The contact area should remain supported in the direction of any applied pressure.
Center the washer on clean surfaces and bring the adjoining component down evenly. Inspect for material entering the central opening where access allows. During service, compare any inner edge damage with the surrounding hardware. A replacement should preserve the intended clearance and section instead of using a smaller bore to hold the washer temporarily, which can stretch the rubber and alter contact across the face.
