An EPDM O-ring needs a working interface that limits damaging abrasion as well as a suitable formulation. Viton and EPDM options should be assessed for the actual medium and conditions; neither name removes the need to examine the mating surface, movement, and installation path.
Define the groove and clearance arrangement, including whether the ring remains stationary or moves relative to another component. Surface defects or a sharp entry can mark the rubber before normal operation begins. The ring should be fitted without twisting or excessive stretching and with the contact area kept clear of particles.
Evaluate the completed connection for its required sealing behavior. An abrasion-resistant description does not establish a universal wear life. During inspection, note where wear is concentrated and whether the pattern corresponds to a mating feature or movement direction. Repeated local damage may require correction to that interface rather than selection of another ring described as more durable. Material changes should also preserve compatibility with the actual exposure.
