Flexible rubber gaskets can be molded to follow the actual closing surfaces. A custom outline can follow a joint that has corners, fastener positions, or openings that would make a simple ring unsuitable. The aim is to place useful sealing material along the contact path while preserving the space needed for the surrounding assembly.
Compare the gasket shape with the finished mating faces, including the available sealing width around each hole. Thickness should suit the closing gap and the way force is applied. Making the part thicker to cover an uneven surface can also change fastener engagement or let the gasket spread into an adjacent passage.
Place the gasket without stretching its outline into alignment. Tighten the joint in a manner that brings the faces together evenly, and check that the edge has not extruded into a moving or open area. Material selection should address the actual medium, temperature, and compression cycle. When reopening the assembly, inspect both the gasket and the mating faces before deciding whether the sealing arrangement is ready for reuse.
