A rubber pipe grommet forms an interface where a pipe passes through a panel or housing; any seal depends on contact at both the pipe and the opening. The part has two fitting relationships: its outside engages the opening, and its inside surrounds the pipe. Custom dimensions allow those relationships to be coordinated with the pipe position and the thickness of the supporting panel.
Pipe alignment should be established before the grommet is used to close the remaining space. Forcing an offset pipe through the bore can stretch one side and compress the other, producing an uneven contact pattern. The pipe supports should carry the pipe in its intended position so that the rubber is not continually being pulled out of its seat.
When the penetration is intended to form a seal, evaluate contact around both interfaces with the actual pipe finish and installed panel. A smooth pipe surface, an undamaged hole edge, and even seating are practical starting points. Select the compound for the surrounding conditions and any medium it will contact. Following maintenance, inspect the hidden side of the penetration as well as the visible flange before returning the assembly to use.
