A rubber electrical cord grommet sits in an opening through a panel and provides a flexible boundary around the cord. Its flared sides help keep it in place on either face of the material. The receiving material can include thin sheet metal or a composite panel, each requiring a sound edge at the mounting groove.
The condition of the opening varies with the panel material. A metal cutout may have burrs, while a layered panel can have an uneven or damaged edge. Prepare the opening so the retaining groove rests on a sound boundary rather than using the rubber to hide an unfinished cut.
Measure the effective thickness where the groove will engage, including any finish or local layer that changes the fit. The flange should lie naturally on both faces. If the panel compresses or flexes during assembly, check the grommet again after the surrounding hardware is secured.
Route the cord without trapping it against a flange edge. During inspection, look at the panel as well as the rubber: a grommet can remain intact while the opening around it deteriorates. Correct that underlying damage before fitting a replacement component.
