An EPDM rubber seal gasket should be selected for the complete set of substances it will encounter. Normal service fluid is one part of that environment; a cleaner used during maintenance may create a different contact condition. The custom gasket can have the correct mechanical outline and still require a different formulation for its intended duty.
List routine exposure, occasional spills, and the permitted cleaning process when defining the material. Include whether the rubber remains in contact continuously or is rinsed and dried between uses. These conditions belong to the actual application and cannot be inferred from the black appearance or general EPDM name.
The molded section must also correspond to its receiving seat. Keep the selected compound associated with the finished part so a visually similar silicone or other rubber version is not substituted during service. If the gasket changes size or surface condition in use, examine the substances reaching it before assuming the joint needs greater compression. Replacing the part without correcting an unsuitable exposure can repeat the same change in the next gasket.
