A round rubber washer can encounter rotation during tightening even when its final service position is stationary. The face of a threaded cap or fastener may drag across the rubber as it turns, affecting how the washer reaches its seat. This assembly movement deserves separate attention from wear during normal operation.
Identify which adjoining surface rotates and which holds the washer in position. An inner edge that catches on the central feature can twist while the opposite face is being dragged around. Check the intended assembly method and the condition of those surfaces before attributing a damaged washer solely to its compound.
The custom bore and face dimensions should correspond to the actual connection, with any assembly aid limited to one compatible with the materials and application. Examine the washer after a representative fitting operation where practical. Circular scuffing, a rolled inner edge, and a local cut suggest different contact conditions. For an O-ring version, use the specified rounded section and seat rather than treating a flat washer as mechanically equivalent. The completed joint needs its own service evaluation.
