Rubber grommets for sheet metal should be selected around the finished edge rather than the sheet thickness before cutting and coating. Burrs, rolled features, or paint buildup can change how the groove engages the opening. The rubber profile needs a smooth, consistent seat so the cable remains separated from the metal at the actual passage.
Check the cutout dimensions and the cable covering where it crosses the panel. Include clearance behind the sheet for the retaining lip and the cable bend. The selected compound should suit the local temperature and exposure while the harness route avoids constant pull on the insert.
Remove sharp edge defects before installation, then work the grommet into place evenly. Inspect the hidden side before other components restrict access. After cable supports are secured, check the seat again for a lip lifted by routing tension. During service, investigate a cut at the groove alongside the metal edge; replacing the rubber without correcting a burr can reproduce the same damage immediately.
