A rubber cushion gasket introduces a flexible contact between components, while a sealing washer must also establish the required barrier at its mating surfaces. These functions can share a molded part, but they should be evaluated separately. A cushioning feel does not demonstrate that a continuous seal exists around the joint.
Define the contact area, available compression, and the load applied through the surrounding hardware. The rubber should remain supported rather than being squeezed into an open gap. The formulation needs to suit any medium or cleaning exposure at the interface as well as the mechanical contact.
Assess the assembled joint for both its movement or cushioning behavior and its required sealing function. Watch for displacement as the components close and for an unintended hard contact that bypasses the flexible layer. During inspection, compare the resting profile and contact pattern with the intended condition. A lasting change can affect clearance or compression even when the part has no obvious tear, so replacement decisions should consider more than the visible outer edge.
