A rubber wire grommet separates wiring from the edge of a metal panel opening. In an automotive location exposed to heat, the selected rubber must be assessed alongside the panel temperature and cable jacket. The surrounding metal can transfer heat directly to the retaining groove even when the cable entry is away from the main heat source.
Custom molded profiles and material choices allow the part to match the opening and operating conditions. Establish the finished panel thickness, cable diameter and available flange clearance. The fit should keep the rubber located without squeezing the passage so tightly that normal routing becomes difficult.
Inspect the cut edge before installation and remove any burr that could cut beneath the visible flange. Evaluate the assembly through representative operation and cooling, then check for a shifted lip or permanent mark around the groove. The nearby harness supports should keep the cable from resting heavily on one side of the opening. During service, inspect the panel interface as carefully as the visible cable bore, because damage can begin where the metal is hidden.
