A Buna-N rubber seal gasket can be customized as an NBR washer for a joint involving oil contact. Select the finished compound for the particular oil, temperature and exposure duration. The inner opening, outer contour and thickness should also match the supported area between the mating parts.
Check where compression occurs when the joint closes. The gasket should remain on its intended sealing path without an edge being pushed into an adjacent gap. Fastener alignment and mating face condition can affect that position even when the loose washer appears to fit.
Before assembly, remove residue and particles from the contact faces. Place the rubber naturally rather than stretching it around a misplaced opening. During service, inspect for swelling, cuts or uneven flattening. These changes can indicate a material exposure issue or a mechanical fit issue, and the cause should be identified before replacement. A tighter joint is not automatically the solution when the gasket no longer has its intended shape.
