A closed oval rubber grommet contains a rubber membrane across its center. It belongs in an opening intended to stay covered, with the outer groove locating the part in the panel. Although open and closed versions may share a similar perimeter, their central functions are different.
For assembly work, identify the closed part before routing cables. A wire should not be forced through the membrane as if it were an open bore. If a particular opening will carry wiring, its entry design needs an intentional passage and a suitable relationship with the cable. Cutting the membrane during installation changes the original part.
Select a compound suited to the covered opening's environment, and match its mounting profile to the panel.
When fitting the cover, apply pressure near the retaining perimeter rather than concentrating it in the middle of the membrane. Inspect the center afterward for accidental punctures and examine both rounded ends for a folded lip. During servicing, keep small tools and loose fasteners from pressing into the closed surface.
