An oval rubber grommet should follow the finished opening with enough retaining engagement around both curved ends and the longer sides. Its orientation matters when the cable or adjacent structure approaches from a particular direction. Aligning the outer shape before routing the cable helps avoid a twisted seat that appears flush only along part of the perimeter.
Select the length, width, end profile, and groove around the actual supporting surface. Different size versions should preserve the fit needed at each opening rather than being chosen by visible flange size. Any insulating requirement depends on the selected compound and complete entry construction.
Seat the grommet evenly, then arrange the cable without pulling one end of the oval out of position. Check behind the panel where accessible for a folded retaining edge. During maintenance, inspect the narrow ends and the region nearest the cable bend for damage. A replacement should restore the full perimeter fit instead of being stretched to cover a cutout whose dimensions have changed.
