A seal ring identified with NBR, Viton, or silicone options needs a defined formulation for its intended use. Those material descriptions represent different choices, not a single ring that is universally suitable for every fluid and temperature. The actual medium and operating cycle should guide selection alongside the mating geometry.
Establish the ring dimensions, groove profile, and whether the working interface is stationary or moving. Check the assembly route for sharp entries or features that could damage the surface before the ring reaches its seat. Appropriate support and compression remain necessary even when the material is compatible with the exposure.
Evaluate the completed joint under its specified conditions. During service, identify replacement rings by their required configuration rather than appearance alone. Inspect the removed part for swelling, cuts, or extrusion and consider material exposure and mechanical fit separately when finding the cause. A different compound will not correct an excessive mating clearance, while a dimensionally identical replacement may repeat a formulation mismatch.
