An adhesive rubber foam gasket provides a compressible layer along a matching contact path. When adhesive backing is used, it helps locate the gasket during assembly, while the foam section responds to the closing gap. Thickness should therefore be selected around the available compression space rather than simply choosing the thickest piece that can be attached.
The foam material and structure need to suit the intended exposure. Do not assume a particular water barrier or recovery behavior from the word foam alone. Consider the joint's surface condition, closing movement and the way the gasket will be cleaned during service.
Place the gasket on the prepared surface without stretching the strip or ring. Follow the application conditions for the selected adhesive, then close the mating part and check for areas that crush or remain untouched. An uneven contact pattern may indicate a varying gap. During replacement, remove old foam and backing residue so the new gasket is not fitted over an irregular layer that changes its compression.
