A flexible rubber washer can seal around an opening only where the mating components bring its faces into contact. The water path through a joint may run beside the bore, around the outside boundary, or through another nearby feature. Identifying that route is more useful than simply making the washer wider.
Trace the intended boundary on the assembled components. A recess beneath part of the washer can leave a route behind the rubber even when the outer edge looks compressed. An adjacent fastener passage may also need its own sealing arrangement. The custom outline should address the actual connection rather than cover unrelated openings without support.
Choose the compound for the water and cleaning conditions involved. Evaluate the joint in its finished orientation and under its specified exposure, including other openings that are part of the same enclosure or fitting. During service, note where moisture first appears before disturbing the washer. That observation can help distinguish a damaged sealing face from a separate path elsewhere in the assembly, avoiding repeated replacement of a part that is not causing the problem.
