Thick rubber washers occupy more axial space than a thin separating layer, so their installed height needs to be considered alongside the fastener and adjoining components. The washer should receive its intended compression without preventing the joint from reaching the designed closing position. More rubber thickness is not automatically a remedy for an uneven mating surface.
Check the bore, outside support area, and clearance around the washer as it deforms. For a silicone version in a heated application, select the compound and assess the joint through its actual temperature cycle. Changes in surrounding dimensions can affect the available compression.
Place the washer squarely on its seat before tightening. Keep the load centered and inspect for material spreading into an unsupported region. During service, look for permanent tilt or a compressed section that differs around the circumference. Review the mating faces and load direction before replacement rather than adding another layer, which changes both the closing height and the contact arrangement beneath the hardware.
