A viton gasket and an EPDM version should be distinguished by their selected compound even when both are black and share a custom outline. The material needs to suit the fluid, temperature, and cleaning conditions at the joint. Keeping that identity clear prevents a visually similar spare from changing the intended sealing configuration.
Compare the gasket's perimeter, openings, and thickness with the finished mating faces. A material change may also require assessment of the installed compression and handling during assembly, rather than being treated as a direct swap based only on outside dimensions. The joint should support the sealing path around every opening.
Fit without pulling the gasket to align a distant hole. Close the faces evenly and check that the rubber remains inside its seat. On disassembly, inspect for swelling, flattening, and damage that follows a specific surface feature. If the service medium changes, review the compound and complete joint again before continuing with the previous part solely because its shape still matches the hardware.
