An EPDM rubber thick washer introduces a substantial compliant section between matching surfaces. The extra thickness changes the installed spacing and available compression, so it should be selected as part of the complete joint. A thick washer and an O-ring with a different cross-section are not automatically interchangeable.
For heat-related service, evaluate the chosen EPDM formulation at the actual exposure, including duration and repeated cycles. The material name does not establish a universal temperature range. The surrounding hardware and any sealed medium also contribute to the required configuration.
Check the bore, outside diameter and support beneath the washer before fitting. The rubber should not be squeezed into an unintended gap or used to compensate for a damaged mating face. During maintenance, inspect for permanent flattening and local cuts around the inner edge. Preserve the intended new-part thickness when replacing the washer rather than matching only the reduced profile of a component that has already deformed in service.
