Flat washers create an annular face contact that differs from a conventional O-ring's round section. The selected seal format should match the joint's retaining geometry and available closing space. Similar inner and outer dimensions do not make those formats interchangeable, because their contact changes differently under compression.
Check the supported width, thickness, and central clearance of the washer. For an O-ring position, define the groove and section instead. Choose the rubber compound for the actual medium, temperature, and movement so the material works within the selected geometry.
Place the appropriate seal on clean surfaces without folds or twist. Close the joint evenly and inspect for material displaced into a gap. During maintenance, identify the format before choosing a spare and examine any damage against the mating hardware. A thicker flat ring or a nearby ring size should not be used as an automatic remedy for a leak caused by a damaged face or an unsupported contact region.
