How does an O-ring differ from a flat gasket?
An O-ring is a continuous ring with a defined cross-section, commonly installed in a matching groove. A flat gasket follows a wider joint face and may include bolt holes or internal openings. Choose the form around the available sealing space and compression arrangement.
How do I measure an O-ring for a size comparison?
Identify its inside diameter and cross-section, then compare those dimensions with the groove and mating parts. A used ring may have stretched, swollen or flattened. Treat its measurements as a starting point and use the intended joint dimensions to define a replacement.
Which details matter when choosing rubber gasket material?
Consider the substances touching the gasket, operating temperature and how long it stays compressed. The flange condition and closing force also affect the choice. A material name or hardness value alone does not establish whether a finished joint will seal.
Why can a soft gasket still leak?
A soft material cannot close a gap where the section never makes contact. Check the gasket thickness, corners, flange flatness and compression around the entire joint. Uneven fastening or a displaced section can leave a leak path even when the rubber feels soft.
Can a rubber washer replace a sealing gasket?
Only when the washer's shape, material and compressed contact suit the joint. Some washers mainly cushion or space a fastener rather than form a seal. Review the inside opening, outside contact area and fastening arrangement before assigning it a sealing function.
